Hi, I really like the FF7 storyline, I've seen Advent Children, read up about the game...but I haven't actually played it. So, there are things about the world I just dont' know. So as I think of different character concepts, let me ask this:
How often have Cloud'n'the gang encountered either zombies, or vampires, or ghosts, or any form of undead/Necromantic shit? Not a big deal if it doesn't exist in this game, just want to know for possible story reasons, depending on what I make.

I've played the FFVII series for only three years and well I have never seen anything come close to it except in fan writen stuff. I think the closest thing you can get to undead in the game is Vincent Valentine, he has been shot dead and brought back through experimentation, you can correct me on that if I am wrong.
But I bet if you go into HackCoding or Digital Imaging you could get some Scurge action in Final Fantasy Seven. To me I'd be sitting on my bed grinning so big I'd look like Cheshire hehe.
I bet however there are Vampire in Final Fantasy. Afterall - Vincent is said to be one right?

I always figured the different FFs take place in different, like, dimensions, though. Does Cloud Strife exist on the same world as Squall?

Like...for example, 'Materia'. Is 'Materia' the source of pretty much all power except magic here? Does that exist in other FFs?

Materia... Hmm I am not sure on that one. And yes they are all on different planets. Same universe but different worlds.
It took me a bit to figure the world thing out myself. When I was watching Dissidia I noticed several things - mainly that all are in different eras of time.
FFI - VI I think are medevil.
FFVII - the rest are modern up to the point of Halo like interface lol but mainly modern with cool weaponry.
I think Materia is in FFVII only. It comes from the Lifestream.
Elsewhere it is Magic pure hearted, they keep potions too.

What if it's different time frames? This planet, over billions of years, develops new everything, save a few hearty creatures like Cactuars, Rexuars, a few of the tougher GFs and all that?

I think that some at different timeset. Since most are medevil or even so advanced they have space travel.
And those creatures where sealed away by the Ancients I think, like how Chaos was the somehow was placed into Vincent.
Wow I am begining to sound like a geek/nerd -laughs like Hojo would and shot-

Allow me to step in and clear up a few things for you guys. ^^ (As a random aside, I adore the name, Zod.)
Each of the Final Fantasy games (with the exceptions of those that are actually sequels, I.E. Crisis Core, X-2, etc.) take place on their own planets which are 100% separate from those of any other game in the series.
VII is in fact the only game to use materia as it is crystallized mako energy, a phenomenon generated by a solidification of the energy borne by the Lifestream, which only exists the VII universe.
Vincent is the only semi-undead character you could back up with hard evidence in the VII 'verse, but there are certain monsters which do seem to have necrotic components and/or "Creatures of the Night" qualities. I can't think of anything too specific off the top of my head, so I'll get back to you with some examples once I've done more digging.
At any rate, their existence in the game or lack thereof shouldn't be too much of an influence on your character's creation. After all, we allow characters from the other games on this board (provided you can explain how they got here), and one of my alternates is a female firecat who has had materia surgically implanted into her heart and various other parts of her body. XD As long as you can imagine and come up with a logical, non-powerplaying method of determining their capabilities and position within VII's hierarchy, you're more than welcome to make any kind of character you like.
...I think that's all the questions answered. Anyway, feel free to hit up me or any other staff member if you have other concerns. ^^

Hey, thanks vato! And thank you for liking the name. It's Ol' Reliable at this point.
So...if I made my character sort of an undead hunter, would he be bored and basically unemployed here?
Also...you mean characters from other 'Final Fantasy' games...right?

Yes, that's right. Canonical characters from other Final Fantasy games and original characters designed to fit in VII's schema are the only "Non-Game" characters we really flex for. XD I hope that made sense...
At any rate, your character could definitely be a bounty hunter, undead bit aside (though I find the idea interesting). There are always huge ugly monsters out there to go and bring down for a price when the plot thickens (as it always does since the board would be very boring without a plot).

Interesting. Well I sort of wanted to go for an Evil Dead/Army of Darkness homage in that...he could be a bounty or monster hunter, but it's not that he specifically goes after ghouls and ghosties...they seem particularly drawn to him, y'know?
Also, do you the mods control monsters, or do we just decide if we kill our enemies or not?

Well, I can support that, so long as you don't go around strapping chainsaws to your arm or calling yourself Bruce Campbell. Certain things are simply going from homage to obsession. XP
Monsters are considered free reign except where noted otherwise. If you want to come across something and fight it, then it's entirely in your control as to how that fight goes down. However, if you're with a group and come across a large number of enemies (or a boss type enemy), it's generally a good idea to talk it over with the other people in the group and determine which one of you should be in control of that particular group/boss' actions, that way the fight proceeds in the most realistic manner possible. (IE occasional missed hits, occasional crits, etc.) For a good example of this you can check out 1st Strike, where the enemy was controlled solely by one member of the team, or you can look at one of my archived threads (name to be inserted here) in which Cloud ran into a big stump-looking monster and had to fight it off.
